Travel Guide: Cambridge, MD

Sitting along the Choptank River on Maryland’s eastern shore, Cambridge is a town with historic charm and a variety of water activities. A two-hour drive from Washington D.C., Cambridge has become a getaway destination for people who don’t want to add another two hours to their drive to get to the beaches. Still being along the water, Cambridge is a great retreat if you don’t want to go too far. While it may be a quieter town, there are still a variety of activities and places to eat that will still make a vacation here a great experience.

When to Visit

Because of the water activities Cambridge offers, the best time is in the warmer months. You will find the most variety of things to do here between the months of May and September.

Where to Stay in Cambridge

AirBnB’s or VRBO

Because most houses in Cambridge are privately owned, one of your best options for finding a place to stay is on Airbnb or VRBO. There, you’ll find a variety of different houses that range from waterfront to historic, and you can pick and choose the best one that fits your space, budget, and vacation.

Hyatt Regency Cambridge

The closest hotel is the Hyatt Regency, which is the perfect spot if you’re looking for a luxurious vacation. Sitting right on the water, it has a full golf course, a spa, pools, and the ability to book other activities during your stay. If having everything right at your fingertips is your ideal vacation, this hotel is the perfect fit.

Things to Do in Cambridge

Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center

Dorchester County is the birthplace of Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and social activist best known for her involvement with the Underground Railroad where she helped guide 70 slaves to freedom. To learn more about Harriet Tubman’s life, legacy, and history, this is a great stop.

Emily’s Produce

A 7th generation family farm, Emily’s produce is a must-stop in the summer and fall months to get local produce. Their farm offers a variety of seasonal produce, grass-fed meat, and a selection of specialty items such as ice cream, mead, and flowers. They also have farm animals like goats, chickens, and rabbits that you can feed and activities for kids.

Visit the Choptank River Lighthouse

The lighthouse is a replica of one that used to guide sailors along the river. Walk down the dock towards the water to get a stunning view of the river, and the lighthouse is open to visitors for self-guided tours.

Places to Eat in Cambridge

Vintage 414

Women owned and operated, this store and restaurant offers a selection of fine wines and food that compliments them. They change their menu each season, and each Thursday have “To Go Thursday”, where you pre-order a three course meal with wine pairings that you can take home and enjoy.

Blackwater Bakery

The best breakfast and brunch spot in Cambridge, Blackwater Bakery offers a selection of freshly baked goods, coffee, and delicious breakfast and lunch meals. My personal favorites are their olive oil cake, build-your-own-mimosa, and the biscuits and gravy.

RAR Brewing

One of the most well-known Maryland brewing companies, Cambridge is the headquarters of RAR with their own restaurant Chessie’s attached to the side. They are best known for their burgers, and their newly renovated indoor-outdoor patio is the perfect place to unwind with a glass of beer.

Bombay Social

When I crave Indian food, this is my favorite place to order from. Their restaurant is a relaxed atmosphere with an extensive menu and generous serving sizes (seriously, one entree gives me 3 days of leftovers at home).
